The importance of ancient woodland

Ancient woods are irreplaceable. Their value lies in their:

  • Ecology: over centuries they have evolved rich and complex ecosystems and are home to many vulnerable, rare and threatened species.
  • Archaeology: Because they have been relatively undisturbed, they often contain important historical features that tell us about our past.
  • Aesthetic quality: Ancient woods are some of the most beautiful and tranquil places to walk in and enjoy.

Ancient woods are very rare, making up a tiny fraction of Northern Ireland’s sparse woodland cover. Despite increasing recognition of their importance, they are still under significant threat.

Because ancient woods are so rare, long-established woods have an important role in woodland biodiversity owing to their relatively long continuity.
