Can't find your wood

If the wood you are looking for does not appear on the interactive map or through the wood search, then it may not be on the inventory. This does not necessarily mean it is not long-established or ancient.

When the inventory was produced, the woods initially selected as being long-established or ancient were those which appeared on all the following maps:

  • First Edition Ordnance Survey (1830-44)
  • The most recent paper maps (mostly from the 1960s and 70s)
  • An intermediate set (mostly from around 1900)

Some areas may have had woodland cover since at least 1830, but may not have appeared on all the maps for various reasons, for example:

  • They may have been felled at the time one of the sets of maps were made
  • They were not mapped as they occur on narrow, steep slopes

If the wood you are interested in does not appear on the inventory, but you think perhaps it should, then you can carry out your own research, and then let us know if you think it should be added.
