How do I know my wood is old?

The first step is to check whether your wood is on the inventory of ancient and long-established woodland. You can do this by using the interactive map, or the wood search function.

If your wood is shown on the inventory, it will be classified as one of the following:

  • Long-established Woodland
  • Ancient (3)
  • Ancient (2)
  • Ancient (1)

Click here for definitions of these terms. Bear in mind that the classification has been made with the information available at the time, and is provisional. Additional historical or field survey information may lead to the classification being changed.

If you want to find out more about your wood, or if it is not on the inventory, but you suspect it may be ancient or long-established, you can carry out some research yourself, and then let us know if you think it should be added to the inventory.
