Caring for old woods

Ancient woodland is one of the most important resources we have in biodiversity terms. Long-established woods are also important because of their relatively long continuity of woodland cover, and because they may include features of historical significance.

It is important that ancient and long-established woods are protected for the future, and that their biodiversity value is maintained, and enhanced where possible.

If you are a woodland owner, you will first need to check whether your wood is ancient or long-established.

Then, there are some recommendations you can follow to ensure your wood is being managed appropriately.
