Raven's maps of Co Londonderry, 1622

These maps of the London Companies by the cartographer Thomas Raven were commissioned in 1622 by Sir Thomas Phillips. They form part of the evidence which Phillips submitted to King Charles I in support of his charge against the London Companies that they were not fulfilling their legal obligations to implement the Plantation of Londonderry.

The maps are not as detailed as Raven’s Co Down maps, and are split into 12, showing the land of each of the major London companies. Woodland is not shown on all 12 maps. However, where it is shown it can be seen to be associated with the townlands which are marked and named.

Copies of these maps are available at the Public Record Office, Northern Ireland.
