Funding

In 2001, the Woodland Trust secured funding from Environment and Heritage Service and the Heritage Lottery Fund, to produce an inventory of ancient and long-established woodland for Northern Ireland.

In 2005, the Trust secured further support from both funders to enable full survey and research into 2,617 woodland areas which had been identified as being continuously present since the First Edition Ordnance Survey maps, the first comprehensive maps of Ireland, were produced in 1830-44. In addition, funding was given to stage a series of woodland events around Northern Ireland to inform and inspire people about ancient and long-established woodland in their area.

Support for the project has also been received from the Big Lottery Fund, WWF, the Esme Mitchell Trust, and the GreenCard Charitable Trust.
